Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.

In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Anyone into crafts? Hobbies help us heal the mind and a great stress reliever. Looking for inspiration. What do you enjoy creating? I crochet and want to learn to knit. I don’t get around to as much as I used to. Crafting in the past: painting (pots & wood), cross stitch, macrame, floral wreaths, tie dye, crochet. Life happened and crafts took a back seat. My grandma and mama got me into crafts at a young age. They made Christmas ornaments to sell. I had two on my tree this year from the 70s, that had to be some serious glue.
I make tie-dye shirts. I pray for people while I’m making them, I find out what their favorite scripture is, and then I iron that on the sleeve and the front right bottom corner of the shirt. I gave them as gifts. I called them Prayer shirt. It’s just a little ministry. I don’t get money for it, I just do it because. One of the reasons I started doing it is to get outside of myself. I find that thinking of others, and doing for others helps me not to be depressed. So far I think I’ve given six shirts away. I have six more to make on the burner. I’ll be doing those in the next couple weeks. The worst part is getting the transfer on. The shirts are easy to make for me, but trying to print out the scripture, and put it on. The shirt seems to be a blocking point for me. It’s the computer thing. It’s so cumbersome.
That’s beautiful and hard work. You will be blessed! I have tie dyed a few times. It was mostly to do things with my daughter. Check out sewing dental floss in the shirt to make designs. I did it to a couple of mine. Maybe a vinyl print machine would be helpful. I don’t remember the name they are very popular. I buy a lot of vinyl print shirts on etsy. My daughter and myself have “shirts with words” that make up at least half of we wear. It’s s huge business. Maybe a YouTube search for the vinyl printer reviews would help. They come in different prices. I would have had one years ago but don’t have the room.
What happens with the dental floss on the shirts.
I did an image I think a heart on one and Mickey Mouse on the other. That was almost fifteen years ago before I knew about Disney. Here’s an image. You draw the image on the shirt. I printed an outline and traced it. Then you sew dental floss over it. The wax prevents dye from getting on shirt. There’s probably videos on YouTube. That’s a Pinterest link.

Super cool. Thanks for sharing. 🙏
Not really. I could easily blame being too busy, which I am, but fact is I've never been a craft guy. Wish I was. I used to sketch and draw on the computer a lot though. I still do, just far less. Also, poetry.
My wife is crafty, but is also currently too busy. In our halcyon youth she knit, cross stitched, made candles, all that stuff. She has started the "crafts" up with our 4 year old, but thats exclusively painting, etc. I suspect that will broaden as he grows, and I suspect once he's grown she'll get back to crafting.
We did paint a bunch of ornaments and Christmas "hangings" for gifts this year. And every year, for the past 20+ I've always made a homemade ornament for our tree. We ended up with three of those this year as our son now participates.
Sheesh, I guess we are kind of crafty. And yes, it's good for the soul. Thanks for bringing it up.
Sounds like a great time with family. Nothing beats that. I love the handmade tree ornaments! One year I made gingerbread boy magnets from salt dough and gave as gifts. I’m pretty decent at detail painting if I can copy a photo but freehand not so much. Guess they looked real because my cousins son took a bite out of it. It was actually cuter with the foot bitten into. My mom & grandma made ornaments out of egg shells. Tedious work that I’m not into. They did either whole egg or cut a large hole in it. They stuck a needle in each end and blew the egg out. Not getting a runny egg like that😳 They put little Christmas type plastic figurines inside the egg with wax. Painted, glitter and fancy ribbon on the outside. They sold a lot of them. I found a few when my grandparents house was cleaned out. I’d love to restore them. Crafts with kids is the best! Me and my daughter did lots of crafts and went to pottery places to make things. She’s very crafty now. I’m very proud of that because it takes time and attention.
