it implies a level of being in touch with the populace that [they] just haven't had up until....
Not necessarily. It can also be explained by desperation. If they have been squeezed into a corner, if the only possible potential they have to edge out DJT is to field someone like DJT but who isn't, because his ideas and thinking and message is so darned popular that nothing else gets traction.
Step by step, over the past 3 years, their room for maneuver in terms of political messaging has been decimated.
I agree that he may have been useful. And that is how game theory works. If you have the upper hand in a game of chess, for example, you can narrow the opponents choices to such an extent that the moves he makes actually help you and undermine his own objectives.
In chess, of course, once the opponent realizes that, he normally resigns.
Is this the current state of the game? Whatever the [bad guys] Deep State / Cabal does, they end up helping Trump and the movement towards freedom.... Raid him? His popularity goes up. Prosecute him? More people in the middle side with him. More and more lawsuits? His wins caucuses without even showing up. Run pseudo-candidates against him? His qualities shine out even more.

Had to netsearch matpat.
Haven't played PC games for years, except for angband, which I returned to after about 12+ years, over a boring holiday season.
