To me, en masse, the 17 year cicadas sound like the old Star Trek Original Series phaser on overload sound effect.

There was just an article on the MSM news in New Zealand that we are having a LACK of cicadas this year.

We had an explosion of them last summer here in the SI. Our backyard was covered in little holes - couldn't work it out till they started their clicking. It was deafening.
