I've only been called twice. I was actually looking forward to it. I would have been the best jury member. I even hoped to be picked jury foreman! Too bad, their loss!
Neither time was my number selected after waiting all day in the giant holding room. Didn't need me in the end. Drove 45 minutes to the courthouse each way, had to walk 5 blocks each way from the parking garage downtown past all the panhandlers on a chilly, windy mid-December day. Spent 8.5 hrs. waiting in the freezing waiting area watching other people's numbers being called and the cheapest lunch option was $10.00 + beverage. I was in the very last group and didn't get called when the last 5:00pm trial was sorted. They handed me a voucher for $12.00 in the end and a promised bus to take us leftover stragglers back to the parking garage (it was now dark) no-showed after waiting 30 minutes. So I had to trek back on foot in the dark in the unsafe old downtown area.
My gas cost for the round trip put the day in the red at the end of it. It's a shame those of us with working brains never get to assist in such an important way.

That's the design of the system. 1) They don't want people that can think for themselves. 2) The process is your punishment. It costs you your money and your time and then they insult you by "paying" you using the tax money you paid to support their system.
