As much as I wish she was broke, this is common practice in youth baseball for Cooperstown trips. Especially in CA. They want the boys to learn the importance of representing their community and getting support.
Not teaching the boys anything other than mom and dad will tap their wealthy friends to pay for us, so that we kids don't have to work to raise any ourselves and our parents won't have to pay for us either. Win-Win, am I right??

Exactly , we had to sell chocolate bars, car washes and rake leaves or cut grass !
Yes. I did the same. Chocolate bars, car washes, Christmas tree wreaths, and coupon books for local businesses!
Then have a slave auction. Let them boys go work for community members, get paid, and donate their earnings to the "team".
