Have you watched Halo on Paramount Plus? Master Chief is Spartan 117. I didnt play the game but was he 117 there too? In the TV show the point is made prominently throughout. I find it interesting because what I have watched so far he seems to be someone who has broken through the brainwashing and is now fighting against a corrupt system based on forever wars.
The first episode he saves a childs life after he has been ordered to execute her. She asks him why and he says he doesnt know why. Then he asks her if she would save a child under similar circumstance and her answer is yes and the why is because its the right thing to do. And he replies that maybe thats why he did it too.
My husband played this game series. He said Master Chief has always been 117. In the games, he didn't necessarily break through brain washing against a corrupt warmongering system. He was the hero in the stories, but wasn't the best, just the luckiest. Master Chief found out that kids were stolen and replaced by sickly clones that died so the parents wouldn't know to look for them. The stolen kids were trained as Spartan soldiers from kids, and then put through a superhuman program to become supersoldiers for their intergalactic wars. At first they fought separatists, then got invaded by aliens and fought aliens. The separatists teamed up with the aliens. He said the TV show deviated from the games quite a bit to add the storyline you mentioned. He said he's only seen the one season , so no idea if they'll go back to the game storyline or not.
"John-117 was originally named by Eric Trautmann as a reference to the biblical verse Revelation 1:17, which reads as follows according to the New Revised Standard Version of the text: "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he placed his right hand on me, saying, 'Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last'."[170] The author of this biblical text names himself "John" within it. According to Trautmann, this identifier was a the origin of one of many "huge fights" between himself and Bungie concerning ideas which came out of the writing sessions of the Halo Story Bible, a work originally constructed by he, Brannon Boren, and Matt Soell"

“The Boys” is right in your face. Inverted pyramid with a “17” on it.
