I had to look up the word assimilated. Why use such big words?
habit. And an impossibly expensive education.
In Star Trek Next Generation, beings called the Borg would inject nanites into their victims to "Assimilate" them (take over their brain & body).
On the earth around 2021 (probably earlier), some sick people developed nanotechnology to interface with peoples brains and told them they were being injected with a vaccine.
This is how you wake people up.
