Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Do you remember your home phone number and address? Remember other family or friends numbers. It amazes me I know my home, grandparents & cousins phone number & my address. Even it’s not these numbers I believe we were taught how to memorize. I doubt most people born after the 70s were taught memorization. Heck even writing off was a teaching moment. Taught me to not get caught again😝
I still remember my dad’s phone number and his address. He past seven years ago, but he lived in that house for 20 years.
It’s funny how we still remember things. Only working phone number I remember is my daughter’s, hubby and insurance company. Why the heck do I remember the insurance company? It blows my mind how many phone numbers was in our heads back then. I knew every friend’s number by heart.
I still remember my grandparents phone number. The house that we live in now it was theirs, it’s my moms, and it will be mine. They had that number for over 30 years 40 years. We finally got rid of the landline, and it broke my heart.
Of course. Memorizing something that you need to know as a child like your home address or phone number is just a good life skill. I don’t see why it would stop in the 70s 😂
Singing songs are a great way to memorize, so is reciting, I think the brain does it naturally, it's how musicians learn, too. I do not remember my childhood phone number, though. Repetition works fast. Can learn in less than a week all the words to songs, the Pledge, the Preamble, prayers, psalms. We would copy words from the board, learn vocabulary that way, we also practiced penmanship, but the writing of the words on a list, then using them in a sentence and correction for spelling was part of learning, and it all helped with memory. At 73 there are some things i forget, like a word I was reaching for in conversation. Singing numbers, letters in a spelling does work very fast though, I think it goes to show that music and our brains work together. A bird never forgets its songs, we were made that way.
Monday through Thursday my grandson goes to Pre-school. While waiting to put him on the bus, I go over that weeks Nursery Rhyme with him. When he gets it right, he will say it to his teacher and gets to pick a prize from the treasure box. I suppose learning nursery rhymes is a form of memorization. I live in a Red State so our schools aren't that 'bad' yet. Praise God!
