There's no image upload button anyway. I always assumed we weren't supposed to upload images.
On occasion, I will make an image post, if the image is post-worthy and if I need it on the servers to illustrate something in its own right.
Once you upload an image via image post, the image link is there directly and you can copy/paste it into any text to link to your image.
For example:

You can upload image when you make a Image Post. You get this option when you click the 'Ceate a post" button.
