The material between the positive and negative electrodes (cathode and anode) in the single approx AA cell size cell in the battery is damaged, causing a short circuit, over heating, fire begins, chain reaction to the other cells in the pack and eventually into the entire battery.
Awesome heat and can’t be extinguished with water.
Looking forward to our first battery car fire here in our fire district. It’ll be a hoot. Had a charger burn in a garage a month ago. Luckily the wife discovered it as she was leaving for work, ready to drive her fake Jeep battery Wrangler. We put it out pretty easily.
Charger was wall mounted. Turned off main circuit breaker, then a little water on the burning studs and sheathing. Checked for extension, exposed until we found no heat.
'The town of Viviez in the department of Aveyron in Southern France was shrouded by black clouds of smoke after a fire broke out at a warehouse used to hold hybrid and electric car lithium batteries. Overall, the site held an estimated 900 tonnes of lithium batteries, however, officials claimed that the cause of the fire has still not been determined, Le Figaro reports.'

Pretty basic overhaul procedures.

Now the engineers are baffled, too.
