Scientology has been doing this for over 40 years.
One of their worst acts was launching lawsuits from every state against the Cult Awareness Network until it went bankrupt. Then the Church of Scientology bought up CAN's records at a bankruptcy auction and took over its phone numbers and branding. When people would call CAN for assistance with rescuing family members from Scientology, the Scientologist taking the call would try to convince them Scientology was perfectly fine and safe.
Need a RICO case. Although I do like how they got the IRS to back off with similar tactics, thousands of lawsuits.
I forgot about Scientology since "Chanology".
If any of y'all get the chance, come down to FL and visit Clearwater & Clearwater Beach, just north of St. Petersburg Beach. It's known as "the town Scientology built." The whole town was taken over by Hubbard and his cult in the 80's when it was facing bankruptcy. Even if you miss the big sign telling you you're in Clearwater, you'll know You've found it by how clean everything is and the expressions on everyone's faces. Reminds me of The Stepford Wives. If the city and county officials overseeing that district aren't actual members of Scientology, theyv been bought off by Miscavaige. I'm not scared of any person on this planet and there's not much that scares me to begin with, but I don't ever stop there if I'm in that area going to the beach. It's that eerie feeling.
Clearwater is where they got away with the murder of Lisa McPherson. They restrained her to a bed and dehydrated her to death in order to "clear her of Thetans."
More sophisticated than the Westboro Baptist Church members by far, but totally miss the boat by exploiting the First Amendment...
