it's actually 2 of the only 3 WB57's left in existence. These planes can fly at over 60k feet. I have no idea what they hope to see, but I find it interesting that they sent these birds up.
There was a show on that talked about two planes would fly along the eclipse path one following the other to extend observation time. The planes can’t keep up with the speed of the eclipse which is around 1500 mph.
They came together over the Mexican airport (General Rafeal Buiena) then did a loop together and are continuing on over the ocean.
Edit: They've turned around and appear to be heading back to Mexico.
