The trouble is he WAS NOT defending him self. They had walked away, he walks out the front of the store, engages again. They had no weapons in hand. He accidentally pulled the trigger. Extreamly sad and very likely most of us might have acted in a similar manner with adrenalin flowing.
He should have taken more decisive action from the start of the incident while still inside the store. It would have be clearly self defense then.
100% agree get out for democrat cities. These are the sort of interactions that Biden and team (China/WEF disarm Americans) are hoping for.
Watch the video closely. They are out the door walking away. He opens the door, to exchange words. Back on.
Also, note he did not mean to fire his gun. Finger on the trigger and he did not mean to pull it. He could have shot a bystander.
The court prosecutor will go through every single frame of this and separate it into 3 events. Inside the store, thief's leaving the store/walking away, then the final engagement.
He is very likely to be convicted based on the final encounter. He should have been more decisive at the start and shot them then. They would still book him, but he would be far more likely to have this dismissed as self defense then.

You must defend yourself while the culprit is inside, not outside.
Bingo!
It sounds like he was being physically attacked. Should that not be grounds for self defence? Or do citizens have an obligation to cower?

He has a duty to not escalate.
