I often wonder about how the people felt at the end of an empire or dynasty. My guess is they were always better off, everything that becomes too powerful becomes corrupt.

Roman Senators volunteered to be slaves of other richer Senators because it was better than the alternative.

They weren't nice to the little people on the way up & were afraid to see them again on the way down.
