Maybe they always were? Go look at plague masks during the Black Plague. Seems a bit cult like.
The plague masks were in accordance with the idea that one could get sick from bad smells. It's not that different from the current thing, if you think about it.
And even then, there were stories of plague doctors spreading bubo contents - i.e. pus, on doorknobs in an effort to prolong the plague.
And leaving infected bodies In alleyways to use dogs and cats as transmission vectors.
Neil has been using Storm rhetoric for a while, for example - There's a storm coming. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But there's a storm coming
