FWIW, there’s an interesting study that came out in 2022 that theorizes the danger of mask wearing for the exact same reason - exhaled COVID virus particles get trapped inside the mask and eventually are inhaled deeper into the lungs, which would in turn make the illness much worse.
I remember reading back then (sorry, no sauce) that researchers were trying to figure out why they were finding COVID-19 in some patients’ blood samples. One of the theories discussed was that the virus was crossing over into the bloodstream via the oxygen-blood transfer process in the alveoli of the lungs. If this is true, then this could possibly explain the Foegen Effect.
