First, the cops are wrong in how they approached and handled this. No doubt. They deserve to be fired.
Second... people... we know that some cops are assholes. So if you want to avoid being treated liked this, just answer their questions and stop spewing "my rights".
For all you whiners who want to say I'm full of shit, you need to understand the context. Those cops were taking him down the moment they pulled up. To poke them (as in poking the bear) is just plain stupid. If you know you haven't done anything wrong, and if you want to avoid this kind of bullshit, just be compliant. FFS, big brother has all your info anyway, so getting all uppity and causing the cops to have to save face is stupid, especially in front of your child. I mean why not just say, "My name is XYZ, I live about 8 blocks from here at 123 Street. I've lived there about 4 years. We walk in the morning because we enjoy walks before it gets too hot. Do you need us to ride in your car to my house so I can get my ID?"
Remember--asshole cops have their mind made up already, and they have to save face because they're infantile.
That being said, this video will have those cops on leave, if not fired, as they should be. They would have been fired or at least held accountable even if this Dad simply complied.
You're getting ripped to shreds for this intelligent comment. Sorry about that.
There is such a thing as context, you are 100% correct and many of my fellow pedes are being triggered instead of thinking clearly.
If it had been me, I would have provided my name and address and offered to allow them to escort me to retrieve it. Would I be kneeling or giving up any rights in doing so? Would I be empowering those pigs? I can tell you what I would not be doing... I would not be traumatizing my kid over something so stupid.
I abhor what happened, but pops could have LIKELY avoided the escalation by changing his candor and approach slightly.
"What's your name and date of birth?"
"I don't know..."
Pig cops think you are sus, so you respond be behaving more sus? That's not going to end very well.
I agree he should have complied TO A POINT, in doing so this would have likely been avoided.
Thanks for thecomment. I am actually pretty amazed at the infantile level of thinking from many. But it's fun responding to them.
And, yes, to a point. When all cops have video, it's pretty easy to go back and sue the hell out of them. The moment you give any reason for investigators to conclude that you were resisting, then you strip yourself of any possibility of exacting real justice. Play their game in the moment (in this moment, with the child present) and fight another day.
