Business Insider article: "One day while working at Intel, Wojcicki was halted in her work because Google was down, and she wasn't able to locate an important piece of information. That's when she realized how dependent she had become on "the site developed by those two dudes in my garage." She decided she wanted to be a part of it."
I call Bravo Sierra (BS) on this one. Kinda reminds me of the Zuckerberg "story" of creating Facebook in his dorm room. When in reality it was a creation of DARPA. The old "Lifelog".....
DARPA was formed in 1958. By 1960 technological innovations started skyrocketing along certain technological paths. While funding for other research was limited or cut. Lots of ideas and developments never actually making past the preliminary model stage at least publicly.
As they were considered “Old Tech” and “Out of Date.”

PRecisely this. A great cover story is needed to make it organic.
Facebook created the day "Lifelog" goes down. Nothing to see here right?
Absolutely agree!
Darpa was around before that, but in any case, don't forget Bill Gates "in muh garage" too.
