I seem to recall a post a long time ago that indicated the pipe bombs were fbi training devices - i.e. inert.

I don't remember the fbi part, but I clearly recall them reporting that it was a dummy, not a real bomb.

I saw that too. They are identical to training devices that the FBI uses.
