Please make sure to test your VPN for leaks before attempting to connect to X over VPN (just search for 'VPN Leak Test'). A misconfigured VPN can leak exposing your real IP address.
Also, make sure your VPN software supports a "kill switch". A kill switch will stop all network traffic should the VPN connection fail (which they sometimes do). If the VPN fails without a kill switch while accessing X, you could be unknowingly hammering on the firewall that's blocking X and your real IP address will be logged. Here are some tips on how to test that your kill switch is working.
You also need to be sure that the VPN company you are using won't fold under legal pressure from Voldemort. If they keep logs, there is a risk that they could turn them over if threatened with legal action.
Not trying to scare anyone away from using a VPN.. just understand the risks. I'm concerned that a lot of people in Brazil with little knowledge about VPNs will install a cheap/free VPN and think they are protected. Voldemort will be looking to make an example of anyone he can catch.
It is good to be aware of the weaknesses of a VPN, and that it is not perfect security.
Your post is informative enough to point people towards the correct path, although I also share your concerns that people will get VPNs that are either free or dirt cheap because they can't (and shouldn't have to!) afford or justify another monthly cost.
Up vote for "under legal pressure from Voldemort."
Thanks for the info. I don't know much at all about VPNs, just the basics.
This is Sage advice. Thanks for your contribution.
Can you tell us which VPN to use?
I use NordVPN and I’ve always liked it but usually the best VPN is one that doesn’t have to do any advertising. I’ll ask some security friends and get back to you in a couple hours.
Edit: Windscribe is what one recommended.
I hope ExpressVPN is a good one. It has a cost - I think &10 a month? I pay for a yearly around $65? I’ll have to go back and check. I use it because Dan Bongino recommends? I could be fooled by him though - don’t know who or what product to trust anymore :-(
ExpressVPN has been around since 2009 and looks pretty good. They claim not to keep logs of your connections. Their software also supports a kill switch.
I think Protonmail now has a VPN, it may be an option.
Cost is a good thing. Don’t trust any of the free ones
