Former public school teacher here... Money does not educate, quality people do. I now homeschool my own children and equip other parents on how to do likewise. Most of us homeschool for a tiny fraction of what the government spends per student, even with the fees of extracurriculars and co-op classes. Plus, we have amassed our own libraries of books in the process!
The argument I heard year after year from teachers and school officials in my home county was that if you cared about your children you'd give teachers more pay to match the richer county next door. They actually tried to tie their pay increases to proof that you loved your children. The higher pay never worked nor did throwing more money at education in any form. Every year the schools got worse. Yeah, I'm sure some of the problem is the kids I see who haven't even been taught simple courtesy to others. But those parents have virtually no say in what goes on in their children's schools. I really believe public schools, largely thanks to liberal school boards and the teachers unions, are beyond saving. Close them all down, eliminate the property taxes that pay for them and let parents use that money to create their own parent directed schools, home school or whatever works for their child.
Agree
I want Trump to appoint Victor Davis Hansen, Dnesh D'Sousa, Charlie Kirk and Elon Musk to come up with a plan to re-imagine education in America. One where students are given a wide variety of experiential opportunities to find something that truly excites them and coursework devoid of leftist Marxist propaganda tailored to their interests. Where local parents help choose the teachers they want interacting with their kids, not administrators.
I completely agree. Some of the best school systems in the world only keep kids in the building five or six hours a day, and the kids run and operate their own lunchrooms when it's time to eat. For the precious time they're in the building, kids learn exactly what they need, and they're not wasting time on busywork and propaganda and "social-emotional skills." American schools have become like prisons. You go in, and you're stuck until that bell rings at whatever arbitrary time the government has decided you need to be there to achieve learning, and all you learn anyway is to be a cog in the machine. It's misery for everyone, and kids are dumber than ever.
I am shocked that public schools get so many tax dollars and education sucks. Shocked, I tell you. Mo money, mo money....
You can throw all the money in the world at the American public education system and nothing will ever improve. The problem is not a lack of money and it definitely isn't a lack of technology. The problem is societal and cultural, and it all starts in the home. And I say this as a teacher. Yeah, we're screwed.
I agree. The kids I taught in SY19-20, my last year, were not the same type of kids I taught in SY79-80, my first year.
This may be my last year. I changed schools to give it one more shot, and two weeks in, I'm already losing my mind. I'm nowhere near retirement, but I will not make it another twenty years in this profession. I need to just start over. Teaching has become a nightmare.
There are a lot of good opportunities for former teachers. Upon my retirement, I started my own tutoring business using social media for free advertising. I am now in demand, working more hours than when I was working full time, and with my pension, making more than my last year. At your present age, I know a lot of teachers who quit after 10+ years and are now in management or ownership of small businesses in my county.
Thank you for the encouragement. I may be asking you for more advice at some point. I think most teachers feel like there are no other options and just suffer through it. But I need a new path. Glad to hear you have found success!
I always liked the Mark Twain quote, paraphrasing, “If they ever start teaching my books in schools, I lost.”
Now, not only have they taught them, but they’ve banned them!
Speaking of attacking the dead, we need to work on bloodying up John, “Son of Cain” McNoName”s “good name” to a bloodier pulp than Benedict Arnold’s currently has.
USS NO NAME, anybody?
