Interestingly, I was at a county fairgrounds today in a flyover state, and it was a show/fair featuring steam-powered tractors. There is plenty of that equipment and know-how still around in the heartland. I think we would be okay, but the population would shrink at least 80 percent.
Problem with that is really the machining of spare parts.
The know-how can only go so far in keeping stuff running without the inevitable need for replacement parts. And then you’d also need replacement parts for the machining equipment and tools used in the production of spare parts. Cutting blades etc.
True, but framers are pretty resourceat machining what they need. Plus there are many spare parts on the ones thatdon't work. I think the equipment would last long enough to get by until drid systems are partially restored.
Just to add some information here for everyone, because there's a lot of misunderstandings about what an EMP attack could entail. Obviously, all of us know that it could be a new from space, but that would not take out the entire planet, not even close. It would only destroy all of the electronics within a cone shape around the detonation point.

Boeing's EMP cruise missile, known as CHAMP (Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project), is designed to disable electronic systems by emitting high-power electromagnetic pulses (EMP). It flies over enemy territory, targeting infrastructure by pulsing EMPs that can knock out power grids, communications, and computers without causing physical damage. This technology provides a non-lethal option for disrupting enemy capabilities while minimizing collateral damage.
Well. Who comes out of it on top likely depend on who is able to organize the most people the quickest. And how quickly ammunition stocks deplete.
Once it’s down to blades and black powder. Firearms aren’t quite the force multipliers they used to be. And then it’s down to who has the most People to throw at the problems.
Hell no. Most of what would get disabled is useless entertainment crap. But I have in my shop several Faraday storage containers for the stuff that matters. If you know how to protect an entire modern vehicle let me know. Meanwhile I'm buying a pre 80 truck without any electronics.

Old diesel engines are also good, they require zero electronics to run.

i had a dream awhile back that people were going into gas stations & anywhere that had food & were buying entire shelves
I could buy a new computer for my old Ford ranger and put it in a Faraday box along with my old phones and tablets and such.
Other than that I'm as prepped as I can be.
