I know it's one of the reasons I did. Though Ermey's representation did scare the shit out of me - I found my DIs to be harsh but not as harsh as what I saw in the movie.
Don't forget...that was after Vietnam that Kubrick did that movie, 1987...And LE Ermey was EXACTLY that way...Kubrick looked at a lot of Marines UNTIL he found Ermey from what I remember!!!!!
The initial guy cast for the role was all set, but Ermey's consulting and participation convinced Kubrick to go with him instead. The original guy was extremely upset about losing that role, but ended up at least playing the psycho helicopter gunner mowing down Vietnamese farmers later in the film. He ended up being the one saying the most disturbing line from the most disturbing film of the 80s.
You wouldn't think it, but R. Lee Ermey was actually a cool mfer in person. I think a lot of Marines became Marines because of him.
DON'T THINK...THEY DID!!!

Well when my dad went through boot back in the 60s, he said that DI could lay hands on you. Maybe that is needed in today's military.

I'm pretty sure the warden in the SpongeBob episode "The Inmates of Summer" is supposed to be the same character that R. Lee Ermey played:

Well it was R Lee voicing him lol
