Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way

Anyone know anything about front door cameras?
Commies have been stealing my yard signs.
Ring is pretty good. You can also use as nest camera
I wouldnt trust any of those cameras that send all your data offsite. Get something that only you have access to. Even if the camera angle doesnt record anything personal, its still eavesdropping on you. Its constantly recording all audio and sending it to Amazon.
Ring has a terrible reputation for this.
u/Pbman2
Dafuq! Why would anyone do this in their right mind lol
But yeah, thats why I mentioned u/Pbman2 that it connects to cloud directly. Always assume someone will be accessing anything that goes to the cloud.
That said, there are very few options for a camera like Ring that does not connect to cloud. You need to install an IP camera and connect it to your computer and install a open source software like ZoneMinder. BTW, all these opensrc Camera software I tried really suck, sadly.
I remember reading the microphones in them were very good and were picking up conversations from quite a distance.
Then again, your smartTV is probably doing the same thing. All you can do there is hope they dont allow any work experience kid and his emotional support dog full access to them.
I'm ok with my front door view on the cloud. I tried some other brand years ago,and they had terrible software.
Will it spot my front yard,or just by the door?
And I need a wireless connection to my computer I guess.
Ring has a pretty wide angel. We installed it next to the front door, and we can see pretty much 75% of the front yard.
It just needs a Wifi password to connect to internet.
Note that the connection is direct to their cloud server and you access it via an app you install on your devices. It does not connect to any local computer in your network.
Thanks, that sounds easy.
They got your zip tied ones?
We use La View, kept it simple with no subscription. I don’t know much technical info since my husband set it up, but it captures images on motion if you want, can do video, and it also has a mic option. You can view live stream in the app. It was fairly inexpensive with good reviews.
Yes it was a lot of work. I was going to put out another one today, but its Sunday.
Guess I need some steel t- posts.
Here’s what we use indoors pointed out at door, porch, lawn, etc. no mounting needed. We bought SD cards so the images store. They have other options too. GL, Fren.

Thanks, i might back down a bit, my 85 year old mother is staying with me,and I don't want to escalate to much.
They took them on the weekend, when they have the liquid courage maybe I'll just take them down on the weekend.
I now use Eufy instead of Ring. No monthly fee, no sending data offsite. Try the Solo Cam, good angles and settings.
Get trail cams.
my paranoid coworker uses Arlo brand. AFAIK, he gets access to his own video. I know nothing about the brand
