Greenland is actually pretty darn big. At 836,330 square miles it's over three times the size of the state of Texas. Denmark is small but Greenland is not.
The U.S. has had a military base there for a long time. It was Thule but now is called Pituffik. Here ya go:

I suspect there is a loooooot going on in that base. Most of it underground.
Very strategic location.
Lots of ancient tech buried under the ice there..
