My Dad was 18 and landed on Iwo Jima at age of 18. He was the son of Italians that immigrated to this country after World War 1. When he joined the service, the community was so proud they published his enlistment in the Italian section of a Philadelphia newspaper.
My father in law was a POW that survived the Bataan Death March and a Japanese prisoner of war camp.
Neither parent talked about their experience and were proud to serve their country.
Paternal Grandfather was in WWII - US Navy.
Maternal Great-Uncle was a paratrooper in WWII.
Had other relatives in WWII as well.
I wish I had been old enough before the ones I met had died to ask them questions about the war/thank them for their service.
We go back all the way to the French and Indian war.

GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS!
Husband's father was a china marine. WwIi Started, Marines wouldn't take him because of heart murmur. So he joined the army. Ended up in Patton's 3rd.
Serve who? The oil barons? Corrupt politicians? They aren't serving the people that's for sure. There wasn't a noble cause to fight for since ww2.
