I did this months ago. Enabled my phone to show Bluetooth networks Type=Unknown.
Inside house showed no type - unknown networks. Walked out back of property where mother-n-law, and aunt-n-law were, and picked up two type - unknown networks.
They left, the type unknown went away.
With aghast wonder I tried to explain this to them, but when I detected that their head were about to explode, I backed off.
Also, I did read something a while back, that the latest Android update will disallow this ability to detect unknown networks, so proceed carefully with updates.
You likely picked up their phones, did you ask if they had bluetooth turned on? Most people just leave it on all the time especially if they use their phones in their cars. If they did and you had seen four networks then you'd be on to something.
I did this at my office and only picked up office equipment and people's phones and laptops.
Also BTW RFID and Bluetooth do not use the same frequencies and protocols.
If I had picked up their phones the type would not have been Unknown. It would have showed the a valid device code.
Bluetooth classic and BLE technology standards utilize RF signals to communicate and exchange identification information, which means that both standards fit in the category of radio frequency identification (RFID). Bluetooth classic and BLE devices communicate via RF waves on the 2.4 GHz frequency, and usually include a battery, which classifies them as active RFID technologies. Both technology standards are also used for uniquely identifying devices, items or assets, or locations.
How Bluetooth Beacons and Bluetooth technology works
As described above, Bluetooth is a type of Active RFID.
Finding out it doesn’t work with an apple device is helpful information.
