Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way

I love essential oils. I’m just starting to get back into using them. I didn’t want to use them while my daughter was pregnant and the baby was small. She thought I was nuts for years and is now starting to use them.
Do you use a diffuser? I’m interested but never tried other than passive diffuser. There’s so many different ones on the market I don’t know where to start.
Love frankincense but not lavender. I know it’s one of the best oils just can’t get past the scent. Don’t understand it but I love the scent of fresh or dried lavender.
I’m getting more into plant based oils for my face and body. I don’t quite understand or can explain the difference. Other than it’s how they are processed. Plant oils are plants infused in oil for a certain amount of time. I buy a lot of these from people that forage and make the oils.
I diffuse during the day in the family room and during the night in the bedrooms. Truthfully I usually use NOW no oils in the diffuser rather than my more costly Young Living Oils. But I buy from several different reputable places. There are many different lavenders...Lavandula Angustifolia is the mildest. You can also dilute lavender with a carrier oil, which will cut down on the fragrance somewhat. Either a 1:1 ratio up to a 1:4 ratio (drops).
I will recommend a book that is pricey but is the basis of everything to do with oils. I make my own capsules, potions and I have made use of his information on EO safety. Pregnant women, babies and all age children and adults can benefit from essential oil usage...the key is SAFETY. This book has safety guidelines for all ages and lets you know which oils can be used safely at what age. My go to book...
Evidence-Based Essential Oil Therapy by Dr. Scott Johnson....maybe you can find it used...
I use NOW oils to diffuse, Young Living ( I can use internally), Original Swiss Aromatics sold by Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy (founded by Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt...a Ph.D in chemistry), Revive, Florihana sold by Healthy Traditions online and Plant Therapy where Dr. Tisserand consults and he wrote the definitive book on essential oil safety. There are some other good companies but you have to be VERY CAREFUL as there are a lot of oils that contain impurities. If you need any more info let me know.
Thanks for the info. I’m sure at some point I might have a question😊 I’m familiar with Dr. Tisserand and the Plant Therapy connection. Seems like he started an essential oil company and sold it. I used to follow lots related accounts. I forgot to mention before Aromatic’s International, I do love their oils and their blog is a great resource. I was using essential oils topically for pain. I’m having more success with oils made from plants by infusing plants in oil for certain amount of time. I would love to grow my own plants and make the oils. I’ve found great people that forage the plants & make the oils. I buy body salves, oils & skin care from multiple people. I rarely use a large company’s body products. I dabbled in making essential oil blends. It’s not something I want to do right now. I’m more interested in learning the properties and medicinal benefits of plants for skin and health. What old essential oils I have I’m going to make room and potty spray for myself and friends. Maybe a winter project. I believe in aromatherapy! Maybe one day I’ll start diffusing in the house. I buy beeswax candles scented with essential oils and would like to get frankincense resin & palo santo ticks (I’ve got a candle & love it). My shampoo has palo santo oil in it. Those two are my favorite scents, I prefer woodsy scents to floral. I know how great lavender is, just can’t tolerate the scent. I keep the oil for emergencies like burns or scraps. I don’t get into taking essential oils internally. It’s not something I can agree with. I don’t intend to argue about it. I believe it’s not very safe for companies like YL and doterra to promote this. If someone wants to ingest internally it should be under the guidance of an expert. Also, there oils are way over priced because they require membership. There’s plenty of research available online about these MLM (major level marketing) companies being fraudulent. I’m not trying to bash your opinion. I’m putting this here in case someone reads this and doesn’t know about buying essential oils. Basically they get the oils from the same place the other legit companies do but sell at an outrageous markup.
First let me correct an error I made. Robert Tisserand is a leading authority on aromatherapy but he is not a doctor. Secondly I am sure that you are aware that the plant infusions in oil are not considered as essential oils. It is a way to get the essence of the plant without the extraction methods necessary for essential oils. They are both very beneficial and the infusions are something you can do at home which makes a big difference. It would be great to make your own.
I agree with you 100% about the atrocious markup on goods in the multi-level companies. Just by way of becoming knowledgeable...I use references outside of YL for my internal oils protocols. I am not sure YL promotes it...it is a personal choice and I have no problem with it but I can respect your decision for you and your family not to use them internally. Actually oregano capsules are sold commercially and I have found them to work well. I use YL blends but get most of my single oils from other sources. Again...as long as your decisions are based on research it becomes whatever works for you. I am NOT a fan of multi-level companies but I do find many of their protocols such as the Raindrop Therapy Massages and the Emotional healing protocol to be very effective. I have been in it long enough to reap some benefits from it...but I am very careful what I order moneywise. It is obviously not for everyone.
I love to read and learn and I also use homeopathics but I have to say I LOVE the smell of the oils. It sounds like you are doing fine on your own...but I suggested the book for the safety protocols in it...I just found it to be very useful. Happy oiling!
I honestly didn’t know if he was a dr or not. I’m familiar with his work and knowledge. I completely agree with everything. Learning is so much more important to me than when in school. If something is working for you (anyone) why change it!? Heck even if a person wants to spend more $$$ on something that’s cool. I love the concept of different companies doing different blends that the other doesn’t have. I have two cbd essential oil blends from plant therapy and they don’t make it anymore. Guess cbd wasn’t profitable. I don’t care about cbd, it’s too expensive for me. But these oils are a God send for me. Especially the headache oil. It takes a headache away quickly and soothes sore muscles. After the new year I’m going to email and request they sell blend with out cbd. They will probably give me the recipe. They are very good with customer service. Yes, I’m aware plant infused oils are made differently than essential oils and are different. I get more pain relief from these oils either stand alone or made into salves. Also they are cheaper in the long run than essential oils if I’m using topically. Those little pre blend roller bottles don’t go far. If I were to blend myself I have to buy multiple oils and carrier oil. In addition carrier oils go rancid and I don’t use them quickly enough. Then the whole process of sanitizing bottles for blends🤦🏻♀️ I’d rather pay someone and get what works. Plus I’m supporting independent businesses. Good chat 🥰
