Japanese culture has a thing about saving face. Once Trump threw out the 200bn request, the CEO was about to choke. Trump knew the CEO couldn't say 'no' because he would look weak. Kind of a dirty move, imo.
We don't need to feel bad about taking advantage of other cuture's stupid quirks. If saying no is weak, but saying no would have put Japan first for the Japanese people, then their culture is wrong. If he had said anything along the lines of "Sorry Mr President, we want to be good partners with you but we also need to be Japan first" then THAT would have been strong, and I don't think Trump would have pushed him.
Trump does whatever will benefit America. Is honoring cultural norms prevents a CEO of a multi billion dollar multinational company from properly protecting his business and nation, then he shouldn't be CEO.
Trump isn't dirty. He's delt with foreigners his entire life, including the Japanese. You think Japan doesn't take advantage of the US? Or even Taiwan taking advantage of America with TSMC?

I would have tried to meet in the middle with 150B
This wasn't a government leader but a CEO of a huge corp. He has a board and shareholders he must appease. His responsibility is to Softbank first.
'Art Of The Deal'
He grew up in New York, notoriously cutthroat in relestate business and negotiations. Again, good negotiation skills.
And then the neck grab bro hug.
I was born in Japan.

America first, period.
