What's interesting is that the currently population of Greenland is around 55,840. That's it!
Greenland was under colonial rule for a long time and the country gained greater control over its internal affairs when the Self-Government Act was made into law in June 2009. However, Denmark continues to have command over Greenland's security, foreign affairs, and financial policy and remains its largest trading partner.
Greenland has many rich mineral and natural resources including hydrocarbons, lead, iron ore, zinc, rare earth metals, gold, precious gemstones including diamonds, platinum, and uranium. Geological surveys and studies indicate the possibility of oil and gas fields in the northern and north-eastern parts of the country.
55,840? Just give each Greenlander a $million or 2 and be done with it! BTW the US protected Greenland all during WWII. It's in a strategic location - necessary for our defense.
I grew up in Denmark and all I would hear from people is “why do we have to fund Greenland” who gives nothing back to us. Danes are the one’s footing that bill. Greenland could never survive independently but really it has no value to Denmark and it’s people. It’s the Danish government that insist keeping Greenland theirs for whatever reason..
Yes - Greenland is being heavily subsidized by Denmark. If Denmark extracting any natural resources from the place? If so that might explain why they keep Greenland on the welfare roles.
Makes me wonder, aside from a strategic defense position for the US, why Denmark hasn't mined it, if it's supposedly "chock full" of valuable minerals. Is there more to the story?
