Yup. The middle of California became a dust bowl because of Smelt that meant nothing. Orchards died and farmer's along I5 had signs up blaming the gov't. That was probably 30+ years ago. Drove that route in December and only a few signs left.

Because we are an irresponsible species and until industrialism is demolished we clearly can't co-habitate within nature and keep a balance. Obviously modern society isn't going anywhere any time soon and it's back to the stone ages, unless the power switch gets turned off. But I get what you are saying. It's just the viewpoint that a tiny fish is a meaningless species. Some of those dissappear and a entire ecosystem can crumble. Yellowstone is a great example of how fragile ecosystems are, especially when man kind has its dirty little fingers in "managing" what we basically have fucked up.
You can not justify killing hundreds of family farms over a single smelt. People are more important than the smelt. I get where you are coming from, but with your logic we would have to reverse modern life completely and go back to hunter gatherers. Never going to happen so we have to be a bit more nuanced in our handling of nature resources.
I am repeating myself. We need to enlist the volunteerism of our citizens. There are a huge number of individuals who are avid Aquarium enthusiasts, both fresh & salt water fish. Very knowledgeable. They might have some suggestions on how to raise and help save & procreate some endangered small fish. If they could find & catch some of these fish.
In the grand scheme of things, unless this little smelt is critical in the food chain, then yes, means nothing. Would the world fall apart if this thing didn’t exist? I think not. Don’t put a guppies existence over the needs of mankind.

I have always heard "pup fish" not smelt. For 30 years, pup fish pup fish pup fish. It's just semantics though.
