I got out 7 years ago. I took out a loan with FNB for 100K, my wife took out one with ABSA for 100K, then we both got on a plane and flew off into the sunset. I don’t feel bad. I don’t regret it.
We were young enough that the entire world was still eager to offer us visas and debt but my parents are still stuck there in their 60’s like you. No chance they’ll get out or get a visa to live anywhere else, and at the moment I’m powerless to help and its eating me alive. Both keep telling me to forget about them and focus on my children, but every day I wait for the phone call to tell me they’ve become one of the statistics.

When I was a young man the US$ was worth ZAR0,74 . The US$ now = R18,80. Our money is still worth a bit locally (other than imported goods) but it would take a huge number of rands to be able to move and live in foreign countries.
