I worked for my family restaurant for 20 years. I learned things that I will never learn with a college degree. Things like:
-CUSTOMER SERVICE
-Plan to prioritize which workload to do first, in real time
-Optimize a task, or at least try to
-There's no "closing time, I stop working!" mentality. I stop when everything's done and the restaurant is ready to go for tomorrow.
-I do deliveries too. Gradually I learn the "racing line" not to drive fast, but to make sure that I drive smoothly and minimize spills for soups and gravy meals. Where to put the food is also important.
-Adding/subtracting on the fly. The trick with subtracting is you don't subtract, you add. For example: the bill is $47.63 and the patron gives you $100. You don't do $100-47.63. You do $47.63 + xxx = $100. Then it's easy - 5...2...3...7. In your head it's like all the digits should add up to 9, except the last one, which is 0. So, 9...9...9....0.
-End-of-day bill calculations with a calculator. You don't need to press the decimal button - it slows down a lot and becomes very error prone. For example, 107.31 ----> 10731.
-Clean the bathroom, dishes, tables, windows, floor, etc... yes, those "minimum wage that college people look down upon" work.
They would love a lot our anons, definitely hard workers. Polish up your resumes, anons!
