I met someone who was in El Salvador when Bukele's round up happened. He said the culture shifted radically overnight, within the space of a week they went from not going out at night to being able to feel safe at the beach after dusk. This video shows more of the jail than I think the one below. i also recommend Tucker's interview with Bukele last year(?) He shares how he and his cabinet prayed to Jesus and had a miracle result. In the jails these men receive daily bible teaching. It may be harsh but it's the best place for them in terms of their eternal destiny. It's probably much better than their previous lives. Who knows, maybe one day when 47 has finished the clean-up and some of these men have been genuinely reformed, some of them could be helped to do genuinely helpful work in society under the watchful gaze of good men. I don't know, we have to think of the victims families, but it may be possible if done in the right way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdvuyg5fCXo
I forget where, but I read about a gang member who freely admitted killing people as a matter of course in his gang business. The day they told him he'd be killing babies, his heart asked a question that he had no answer for, and he quit.
I have to ask.-- does anyone know what that top photo is supposed to depict? It's very disturbing...is that a prison or something? I can not imagine a group of men would voluntarily pose in that fashion. What is that place?
El Salvador locked up all their gang members. Basically anyone with face tats.
Went from one of the most dangerous places in the world in murders-per-capita to one of the safest virtually overnight. Safer overall than the US and Canada now.
Their president, Bukele, was re-elected with something like 90% approval. Many people consider him the Trump of Central America.
Is El Salvador also the country that made it legal to mow down carjackers? I saw videos of that and it was hilarious (yes, I have a dark sense of humor). Carjackings went down pretty quickly when citizens were given the green light to mow them down in the street, even if it was to help someone else who was being carjacked.
I hadn't heard that, but I do know that crime is down dramatically.
What's odd is a lot of homes and businesses still have the razor wire, gates and glass atop walls left over from the years of gang violence. There were even still armed guards in stores and parking lots 17 months ago when we were there, along with the military dropping in for surprise security sweeps.
But we felt safer than I would feel in any major rat-run US city.
The human capacity for compassion has been used against us for far too long. I question the actual humanity of the most evil perps walking this planet, anyway...so yeah, obvious criminal activity right in front of you? Mess up their plans in the most efficient way available in the moment.
Yes, President Bukele had El Salvador build huge prisons to incarcerate basically EVERY GANG MEMBER IN THE COUNTRY. The military rounded them all up and they were put in very crowded facilities in conditions that sound like Hell on Earth.
That turned the country around, going from one of the most dangerous, crime-ridden nations in the Western Hemisphere to one of the safest countries in the world. So, the program is working well for most of the public, but as much as I'm glad the criminals are no longer terrorizing, assaulting, and murdering innocent people, I believe the conditions in those prisons are cruel beyond anything necessary or even civilized.

Every gang member in most of these gangs had to kill a family member or the whole family to be part of the "new" family.
Doesn't bear thinking about. Bukele is a good leader.

Would have thought it would be very difficult for him to quit without risking his own life. Do you recall the outcome?

That was Brazil.

Getting them back in line. Nuts and butts
Oh it is a prison alright — 🔥
Oh hell yeah. I love it. Somehow, I think Haiti would be fine with it, though.
These gang members did not respect anything in society. Why should they get any respect?
Throw them all out.
