At a minimum it is known who the money was paid to. Recipients can be forced to produce supporting detail on the goods/services provided.
I keep thinking Ben Affleck's character from The Accountant would be a perfect addition to DOGE. The autist party of him would find all the corruption and the warrior side of him would then go make the proper corrections.

I would think they could still trace the payments by tracing the check recipient. If the payment was for a grant, they are required to submit payment requests that would have been approved or denied. The grantee would have had to specify the things for which they are requesting payment. At least, that's how all the state and federal grants I've managed have worked.

Simply put: The Treasury Department wrote 116 million checks in 2024 and never used the "For" section on the check.
