Actually whatever rare earth metals Ukraine may have they are actually in Russian side of border in Donbas. Trump should make a deal with Putin instead of Zelensky. Give Ukraine to Russia and USA gets access to rare earth metals.
Russia made sure they protected the resource-rich lands in Donbass (apart from Dnieprpetrovsk oblast - the last bastion of mining). Remember that mines are incredibly hard to attack - stuff, and troops gets hidden in the tunnels.
The best part is that very few people on earth can verify some of these things. It's perfectly JUST out of reach. Too easy for good guys OR bad guys to just say whatever they want.
Ukraines main value has been its Farmland. And as a Buffer State. Which is in part what led to the circumstances of its emergent National Consciousness.
It was largely ignored by most of the dominant powers of the continent and treated as a relative backwater. Valuable for Foodstuffs. And the favored Russian tactic of trading Space for Time in warfare. But not much else
Centuries of being ignored. Aside from occasionally being used as a distraction for marauding armies who plundered the farms and estates. Led to somewhat of a Cultural and Language Divergence.
Tsarist Russia and later the USSR took various steps to try and correct previous oversights and end such Sentiments. During the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Via the tried and tested Force Relocation and ethnic purges. Followed by Ethnic Russian resettlement. Primarily focusing on the East which was more industrialized and therefore worth more. Not to mention securing Crimea.
Though all it really succeeded in doing was building yet more Ancestral resentment. Not that Eastern Europe had Ancestral Resentment, particularly against Russia, in short supply to start with. But I digress.
But it created a ready method of fostering chaos in the region. Playing off the undercurrent of Age Old grudges and Hatreds. That no shortage of intelligence spooks of every stripe, allegiance, and color have used ever since.
I am not so sure. I' ve seen geo maps where rare earths are visible: Thorium, but also others, Usually situated in the EAST. It just so happens to be Russia's back yard, and occupied territory.
