When clicking on "Show more" in any embedded 𝕏weet, it opens the same original in two separate tabs. So, I now have the GAW copy and two more on the 𝕏/twitter site. This has been happening for many weeks/months.
[ Using Brave browser on Ubuntu. Brave is Chromium-based, like most modern browsers, except Firefox. ]
It it possible you are clicking on an image of the tweet which then opens a link to the tweet in a new tab? Does the embedded tweet have a "save as image" or similar under right click?
Same happens in Firefox unless "pop-up windows" are disabled ... so one opens as a normal tab and the duplicate opens as a "pop-up", although the result is the same for both (new tab).
As long as I remember, I can click anywhere on the 𝕏weet other than "Show more" and it opens once in a new tab, so no biggie, just puzzling :)
My setup isn't that different to yours, I am using Brave on a variant of Ubuntu. The only difference is that I don't have an X account right now so "Show more" isn't an option for me.
So this only happens in embedded tweets and not if the tweet url is used directly?

I'm deporting myself to ModMail :)

Not an image but, even so, I've never seen an image open in two tabs.
The example is from the OP we're commenting in (click "Show more"):

Correct and I'm also on a variant -- Kubuntu.
