Hi frens,
Our oven recently started emitting billows of toxic plastic scented smoke. Pretty gross right? Apparently the control panel or some wiring may have melted. The whole thing has been really eye opening about how many toxic things are in ovens.
All this has left me loath to just go out and buy another toxic oven but it seems really hard to find anything decent. I want to avoid anything that off gases "the chemicals and protective coatings in the oven cavity are exposed to heat for the first time." I don't really want my food exposed to those chemicals each time I cook.
Any recommendations for an oven with little to no off gassing? Or something that's nontoxic?

"wood burning stove with all the attachments."
...good choice but very hot...
...that is why most southern homes in the day had a summer kitchen...
Yeah, I was thinking old cast iron stoves and backyard clay ovens but not everyone lives in a rural environment. In urban areas many cannot run vent pipes or have mounds of clay in yards they don't have.
Yeah, I was actually considering something like this https://theyearofmud.com/2009/09/12/outdoor-cob-pizza-oven/#:~:text=With%20little%20more%20than%20some,a%20good%20average%20working%20height.)
I'm just not sure how practical it would be to build and use, as we are a young family.
That would be AMAZING. It's probably out of my current price range but I totally agree with you it would be ideal. Have you heard if they have any toxic coating?
Even with those you have off gassing from the wood or coal you use. So ...

Oh my! I want one.
Good luck with this venture. It's very difficult to find mass-produced appliances which aren't filled with all sorts of nasty stuff. It's hard enough eliminating cookware, drinkware, utensils and food storage and replacing as much with glass and stainless steel.
Most of the ovens inside should be porcelain over steel, given the temperatures. I get you smoked a control board and the PCB burned emitting that foul smoke/chemical smell. It happens, but the oven part should be pretty PFAS/PFOS/VOC-free.
Simple is better, IMO. My washer and drier used to ask to be on my network. All my appliances are LG now. My range is made by Five Star in Tennessee and is dumb. The UC ice machine and prep kitchen fridge and freezer are commercial and I'm sure Asian origin.
Good luck in your quest.
Thanks for this, yeah. That was my impression too re the mass- produced poison appliances. It's HARD to find something that isn't just leaking poison into your food.
We spent a huge amount of $$$$ ditching the plastic cutting boards, and nonstick coating crap and lead filled mugs etc and it's intense to see how far away we still are from a MAHA kitchen. Thanks for the tip about looking for an interior that is porcelain, that should help.
MAHA Kitchen - Love it. There is a business idea in there somewhere.
At the very least I would run it empty to burn off any initial residues, then clean it real good with vinegar and water solution.
Came here to say this. We have parrots so we have to be very careful about things like this. When we got a new range, we hooked it up in our work building in an area with roll up doors and ran the oven and stove top on their highest settings for a few hours several days in a row. Then we cleaned everything with vinegar/water before installing it at home. I'm not sure how you could do this with a wall oven but it worked for us and our birds did just fine :).
excellent recomendations
Hey fren. I just bought this air purifier to remove VOCs in my weight room. The air in there was almost un-breathable. This air purifier rocks and it's not too expensive. ($129)

You need to build a walker wood fired masonry cook stove and oven. Here is a YouTube link. enter text The channel has several links and build videos.
oh man that looks amazing.
Based on rocket stove tech which is supper efficient and very little smoke out the stack.
I've always wanted a rocket stove.

Most are just cast iron. some coated with enamel like Le Creuset cookware
I have had to purchase 4 stoves this year. The ones I replaced and the new ones only last A FEW YEARS. The same with other appliances. I had a dryer that was great from the Brady bunch until I messed it up. One of my tenants bought his wife a new dryer and I grabbed the old one. Exactly the same model only a different color.
I would call a service man to see if anything can be done.
that is SCANDALOUS. These modern appliances are just expensive poisonous trash!
Get a second hand stainless steel commercial oven. No teflon or other coating crap on the inside.
And get rid of the microwave while you are at it.
Microwave has been gone for years. Great tip on the commercial oven!
We bought a Siemens double oven (electric). I was wanting gas but someone had ordered this and returned it because they could not figure out the controls of how to turn it on or use. It was marked down and the right size so we bought it. I have not had ANY issues with this oven including -outgassing. We have had it ten years, and we found it easy to operate even though the first owner did not put the owners manual back in the box.
Thanks for the tip, my friend!

Are you talking about a microwave oven?? Don't use one.
no, no. we got rid of our microwave oven years ago. This is a standard wall oven.
