Before reunification, NATO’s primary gig was countering the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. West Germany was a frontline state—split from East Germany, a Soviet satellite. The Berlin Wall’s fall in ’89 and Germany’s reunification a year later marked the Cold War’s wind-down. The Soviet Union collapsed in ’91, and suddenly NATO’s big bad wolf wasn’t huffing and puffing anymore. Some folks—like academics John Mearsheimer and Kenneth Waltz—argued this shift killed NATO’s raison d’être. They figured a unified Germany, free of superpower rivalry in Europe, meant the alliance could pack up shop. Why keep a military pact when the enemy’s gone? Says Grok.
About the only good NATO does is gives the US a dominant military presence in Europe, so we can have influence on the EU by physically being there.
I'm not sure how much value there is in doing this anymore other than to prevent undesirable influence to take our place (aka Islamic/comunist forces).
However, even with that theory the bases failed completely what with the Marxist and communist governments the EU has churned out.
The story spun was that the EU was formed to counter US economic dominance, but even now it is as, or more, corrupt than the UN, so not much reason to keep that going either other than to prevent outright war, and they won't even do that.
TL;DR, We should probably quit NATO and leave Europe to their own stupid ways.
BUT they expanded it up to the borders of Russia!!

The OP is exactly right. NATO was a Cold War creation, and served a legitimate and important purpose in its day.
But its day is over.

Symbols are timeless and tell you who is behind them if you look...
