As a survivor of 5+ RIFs I can attest that the RIF Reduction in force, is a legal mechanism to cut out under performance, poor performance, and non performance. This mechanism is very powerful but can backfire. The first RIF we had the people removed were all older people. They did a class action lawsuit and the parent company got fined in the millions. Now, having learned their lesson they hire young people a month before knowing they are going to RIFs them in a few weeks. ( this actually happened) I asked the young man when he was hired and did he know a rif was coming. It was announced by management. So our RIFs look like perfect cookie cutters. For every single old person fired a new young hire is fired. For every brown, black, or minority a white man is fired. The lawyers get involved and now the good gets axed with the bad. At the end of the day it doesn't matter, the nepotism is rampent and you are either related to someone or your out. I'm just waiting for the RIF to come.
