I think whether Pilate was a sympathetic figure or not has no bearing on the ultimate message of Jesus and Christianity.

yeah, but it paints the pharisees, etc as bloodthirsty zealots and corrupt officials who forced pilate's hand for their own ends.

it really wouldn't make sense for the church to bury this unless they tried to do it in the last ten or fifteen years to appeal to the wokies...
