I just built my own 3500sq/ft. house and have been living in it for a couple of years, waiting for the county to come out and assess it. We'll, this past spring they finally got out of their easy chairs and trundled down to my place. A couple of weeks ago the wife and I went to the county seat to see what our tax bill will be. $3500/yr. Ugh. I'm so hoping this "no property taxes" goes through. I HATE knowing I'm paying the state what a normal monthly house note should be. $300 a month for the privilege of living in my paid off, self built house! Somehow I feel that is a whole lot of BS so this county can have firemen, ambulances and education for our youths. Nope, I'm done with it. I've earned my rewards and I'd like to keep them, even if my neighbors house burns down or his kids get a secondary education.
You in Illinois? Dang that's rough. Heck I've got a second tier lake lot that's an acre. I figured my tax bill would be around $4k, yet it should be less than a grand except we have the latest and greatest "things" the county can't live without! And a school superintendent who has a $150k salarty.
Major kudos for building your own house. A very, very rare feat. My Dad built ours when I was a kid. Lots of cutting edge stuff at the time. I still remember taking apart all of those oak crates that became the floor. Not one single creak in that floor. Only took out a tiny loan to get the house enclosed before winter. Highest hill off Lake Erie. Luckily we had my Uncle to sign off on the electrical work.

We pay $5000 a year for a 1700 sq ft house.
