Sorry I'm Australian. We call the big entertaining tents Marquees here but I thought someone on one of the USA News channels also referred to it as a Marquee as well. I may have misheard.
marquee
1 chiefly British : a large tent set up for an outdoor party, reception, or exhibition
2 a permanent canopy, often of metal and glass, projecting over an entrance (as of a hotel or theater)
3: a sign usually over the entrance of a theater or arena that displays the names of featured attractions and principal performers
The brightly lighted marquee displayed the title of the movie currently featured
The hotel doorman was stationed under the marquee.
I am more used to hearing the word used as a permanent canopy or a theater sign.
My confusion.
The ballroom wouldn't. There is a confusion of terms. We are used to thinking of a marquee as being the big advertisement sign in front of a theater. It is also used to refer to a big area tent erected for mass gatherings (e.g., traveling preachers). Absent a ballroom, any mass gathering must be accommodated with a marquee tent (is what Trump is pointing out).
I got my head twisted on that one. In Zambia, many outdoor social settings require shade from the sun (the tropics, you know) and they set up these big Elmer Gantry tents for the occasion and call them "marquees." I was really puzzled by that for a while. Actually, they can be quite elegant and spacious. Think of a sheikh and his entourage.
Ah, I understand. The word marquiss has the three meanings, and I found them confusing.
Alas, Washington DC is a humid subtropical climate zone (Cfa). This climate zone is characterized by hot and humid summers, with temperatures reaching over 90°F (32°C), and cold winters with temperatures dropping below freezing. The city receives an average of 39.9 inches (101.3 cm) of precipitation per year.
As you can see the weather would necessitate heating and cooling, and a semi-permanent structure would be prone to mold damage from the humidity.
Best to build a solid ballroom. I'm looking forward to it, aren't you?
Why would the ballroom need a marquee? Wouldn't everyone know where they are? I get the feeling I'm missing something.

Thank you so much. It was kind of you to clarify that for me.
