one problem is the width of the rail lines in Russia are wider than ours but I think that can be mitigated. Either way I love the idea.

During late Spring thru early Fall, ships and passenger vehicle ferries can make that transit by water. From mid Fall through mid Spring, you can't drive anywhere in either the Kamchatka peninsula or in that part of Alaska, so going through a tunnel isn't going to be that helpful.

Energy pipelines Alaska to Russia, and then to East Asia, Japan, and China. Alaska has more energy than the whole Middle East combined. Unleash American Energy agenda to make us wealthy and drive regional economic growth as well. Trade route connections to Russian resources via rail drives down transit costs compared to ships, in my opinion. Also, shipping is controlled by a crime syndicate, so bypassing them seems logical.
And to stick a finger in the eye of London Bankers. They have been ACTIVELY BLOCKING the economic integration and development of Alaska for 164 years. British Columbia was largely populated and created by London Bankers specifically to prevent annexation by the US, and to BLOCK a direct landbridge connection between CONUS and Alaska. Trump finally got a full freight railroad connection (CONUS to Alaska) put in place during his first administration.
Unfortunately, wishful thinking at the moment. There is no direct rail link between Alaska and the continental US. Rail heads in AK end officially at Eielson AFB (unofficially down to Ft Greely); in BC the closest they get is Prince Rupert & Fort Nelson. (There's an industrial spur between the two heading NW, deep into the mountains.)

Yes, it runs through Canada. Prior to Trump's term there was not even a full (mostly direct line) that could handle the freight tonnage from what I understand. Canada had been blocking it and not cooperating. I believe the line runs through the NE corner of British Columbia, but that province was mostly bypassed intentionally. [Alberta-Alaska extension is the name of it]. If the US can peel off Alberta and make it the 51st state, problem mostly solved.

A straight energy pipeline is one thing. on it's face, this proposal doesn't appear to be that. Not to mention the oil and natural gas in Alaska are similar resources as to what's in Russia.
Infrastructure linkages are generally a given once there is a pathway. It appears to be a fairly easy add-on to tunnels and many tunnels plan-in additional uses and some bit of expansion. A good parallel to look at is the EU Chunnel which used similar boring technology and a similar design minus the islands in the middle.

A bridge and telegraph line proposal was prepared under the Lincoln administration prior to the sale of Alaska to the United States. Part of the purpose for the sale of Alaska to the United States was to promote a bi-lateral economic integration effort to counter the British Empire continuous attempts to surround and destroy Russia (state of geopolitics circa 1857).

I don't know if they are already drilling, but the staging area on the US side looks active to me. They may have started building roads to the staging area during the Trump term after the freight railroad got completed from US CONUS to Alaska via Canada (Alberta, mostly). There were rumors of a project green light floating around last December after the election, but nothing official or verifiable.
It is likely prepped and ready to go so that it can be mostly completed by 2029. It may be an opportunity to showcase Elon's "Boring Company" hardware and advanced tunneling machinery.
