I have a slightly different take on this. I think Trump is leaning on thee deep state actors within Putin administration. Its much better optics for Putin to tell his DS people that they have to sign a peace deal if Chinese "escape hatch" is closed, otherwise these folks would pressure him saying "We have China to help us, we can keep prolonging this".
Remember, every country has its DS and all of them need to be cleaned up. Some (like in Iran) with missiles, and others with more finesse.
If we hear soon that Medvedev, for instance, has to leave politics for any reason we will know that this theory is correct.
