Anytime you get a "National _______ Association" or any other such labels, it's probably a controlled opposition outfit, or soon will be.
It was founded in 1871, long before "controlled opposition" became a thing. With LaPierre gone, it is operating with a clearer head. No controlled opposition mounts and wins legal cases that protect and extend gun owners' rights, as they have been doing.
As we have found, these organizations either start as con-ops or end up being co-opted. I think we should avoid them entirely and stick to advancing ideas in a decentralized, some would say anon? fashion (;
Staying anonymous and only spreading ideas leaves only the ideas themselves open to attack, and co-opting an idea is much harder, and much more transparent, than co-opting a brand, person, or organization.

The NRA is not as you think it is. I belong to it, to Gun Owners of America (GOA), and Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO), in order of increasing stridency. It is able to muster the legal resources to protect 2nd Amendment rights across a broad spectrum of challenges---and, believe me, there IS a broad spectrum of challenges.
Advancing ideas in a "decentralized" way is tantamount to pissing into a lake one drop at a time. It is just a face-saving excuse for mouthing off without having the slightest effect on the nation. At the very least, there needs to be organized publication and membership communication. I've done this repeatedly in political organizations. It is easy to squelch a stray idea by the assault of "Everybody Knows" brainwashing tactics. This is why collective action is so important. One person cannot have the persistence to fend this off single-handedly. They will say, "What the fuck! I give up! I'm tired of this bullshit." As plenty of people on this page seem to have done. But I don't get the sense that they were actually in the fight.
Perhaps we do need it. Bleh. I'm just so sick of all these Organizations™ who run around under righteous banners while covertly fucking us all over.
