Start carrying a rifle - there are zillions of high quality, very nice, DISCREET rifle cases out there these days. Better to have it & not need it.....
Bring along a backup pistol (meaning; if you already carry, bring a 2nd pistol with you).
Pack extra magazines / ammo.
Ballistic protection / body armor; plate carrier, ballistic shield, or ballistic blanket.
Better to have & not need, than the opposite.... because if you need any of this stuff & do NOT have it, it could well cost you your life...
Stay safe & never let your guard down.
