I took it as a coverup and deflection narrative, being aware of this information.

Whatever the reason, while there may be some level of association as they claim in that study, the causative correlation, as best as I can tell, is shown in this data. Maybe a deeper dive on it from someone with more statistical skill is not unwarranted.
