Air bnb is becoming a big issue in any touristy town out west. Bozeman, Bend Oregon, Missoula, Cantral WA, Couer De Alene, etc. pricing out locals. Rich Californians and Seattle tech workers just come in and fuck up the whole real estate market so quite frankly I am with DeSantis on this one. If you are turning a residence into a vacation home I am not gonna cry about you paying tax.
weak... more "tax the rich" but not all AirBnB owners are rich.
end property taxes all together.
New Yorkers, Californians and illegals are the real problem they come down here and bid up the price of houses to stupid levels. I see double wide going for $350,000 near me and a house built out of shipping containers a few miles from me - for sale now at $371,000. Then add those assholes at Blackrock and Vanguard buying up neighborhoods at above-market prices...
Yeah and the air bnb owners are New Yorkers and Californians and they wreck the real estate market for locals. So if they pay property taxes I ain’t losing sleep over it.
If you own two houses you are rich. The number of people who are married and have a house in the US by age 30 is abysmal. That’s how far the standard of living has fallen.
Didn't the residence used to toss alligators to their unfriendly out of town neighbors so they all got out of there?
You mentioned BlackRock and Vanguard. That's what meatball is trying to prevent, I think. If you buy a house and live there, you shouldn't be paying property tax. Now, If I buy 2 houses and rent one out, then it should be a business tax and a property tax.
I never heard of anyone tossing alligators at anyone...
property tax is evil. Using evil to fight evil is not the solution.
he could address the corporate corruption directly by limiting their ability to buy single family homes. But you can bet his donors are opposed to that.
There should be finite amounts allowed. In Canada they purposely flooded the Country with Indians to drive up the rents all across Canada. This was a 100% RICO Crime. Canada is being run by Global Mafias.
He might be addressing Airbnb owners who are Foreigners more than Snowbirds. Snowbirds have been bringing money down into the Florida Economy for Decades. My Family has owned a Condo in Florida for over 30 years and have never rented it out. He should also look at multiple Unit Owners who AIRbnb. These are the People taking affordable Units off the Market for Younger People looking to buy.
That would be a good one to look at. I know a lot of the Chinese corporations go thru a cell company and purchased a lot of the multiplex units in LA and SF. Most of us cannot afford it.
There should be a Law that a Foreigner can't own more than X residential Units, if the locals can't afford a place or even find a place to buy where they grew up..
I'm assuming this means he's looking at no taxes for principle residences, while maintaining taxes for other properties. It may be tough for a state to do away with both income and property taxes. They can't tariff, and thry must make money somehow. That leaves sales/consumption/hotel taxes.
I'm actually fine with this. I know people want NO property taxes, but the government needs to get money from SOMEWHERE to pay for basic public services, roads, etc. Eliminating property taxes on a primary residence but keeping them on investment or vacation properties is actually alright by me.
I'd personally go a bit further and try to get rid of airbnbs in general like some places already have by effectively outlawing them, but that's just because its a failed system that incentivizes commodifying single family homes (something which I think even most of us agree is wrong and part of the problem). For the record I don't have anything against vacation rentals in general. There IS a proper way to do it (beach houses, rental cabins, etc.), but buying up actual homes in suburbs and trying to be a wannabe hotelier with worse service is NOT the proper way to do it.
Back in the days, Sicily, because of its location and weather, was a very beautiful area so the ultra rich would buy up all the property and either kept the mansions all empty or only use them once a while. The locals were all maids and farmers or gardeners and they paid the mob to keep them in check. I sure hope that is not the situation in Florida because I have seen that in some of the west coast cities like SF. The Chinese (from mainland) would go thru a cell company and purchase multiplex or really nice homes and rent them out as AirBnB. They would send in international students who also work for them in keeping track of their investments such as accountants and maintenance.
Is he creating a problem? Airbnb owners are in it for investment reasons. Levying more taxes on them will cause the owners to pass the increase on to prospective Airbnb renters. That will reduce the amazing tourist industry there. If the property doesn’t create income for the owners, they’ll sell and go elsewhere. That would lower the cost of housing and your home would be worth less and you would have less equity.
Sounds like another way to not get rid of theft
I understand a lot of AirBnB were purchased by Chinese in many of the west coast cities. It might be the same in Florida.

Meatball should do something about that.
Yeah and the air bnb owners are New Yorkers and Californians and they wreck the real estate market for locals. So if they pay property taxes I ain’t losing sleep over it.
I know people here in central Florida who own 2nd houses closer to the coasts and rent them part of the year on BnB...
too much hassle for me, but these people aren't rich.
property taxes are evil either way. Meatball needs to find a different solution.
If you own two houses you are rich. The number of people who are married and have a house in the US by age 30 is abysmal. That’s how far the standard of living has fallen.
If you can afford more than one property and live comfortably, you're rich in my eyes.
Didn't the residence used to toss alligators to their unfriendly out of town neighbors so they all got out of there?

This already exists. Foreigners already pay more property taxes than locals.
Foreigners shouldn’t be allowed to own land in the US.
There should be finite amounts allowed. In Canada they purposely flooded the Country with Indians to drive up the rents all across Canada. This was a 100% RICO Crime. Canada is being run by Global Mafias.
Same thing on the west coast with the H1-B’s. Microsoft needs to be criminally investigated.
Ok. I didn't know.

Problem is not that. Problem is the foreigners use a resident and a cell company.

Might not be a bad idea.
Go Florida!
Amen

Thank you. I tried to book AirBnB b4 and always find them creepy. I quit.
Slippery slope…
Oh yeah, but then, Sicily has the same problem in the past and if not dealt with correctly, you have major problems.
Well that just sounds stupid. Talk about bite the hand that feeds. How about you tell us a little more info?
