In the septuagint, which was the Bible that Paul used and the Bible that Jesus quoted from several times it mentions prayers for the dead..
There are various Bible verses that support this also.
1 Corinthians 3:11–15
Matthew 12:32
Revelation 21:27
Hebrews 12:14
1 Peter 1:6–7
2 Timothy 1:16–18
Matthew 5:25–26
1 Corinthians 15:29
Philippians 2:12
There are numerous writings from the second to 5th century that shows this was was the common belief of the early Christians.

1 Corinthians 3:11–15
Matthew 12:32
Revelation 21:27
Hebrews 12:14
1 Peter 1:6–7
2 Timothy 1:16–18
Matthew 5:25–26
Philippians 2:12
Nothing in these verses say anything about praying for the dead. I do not know what bible you are reading from.
1 Corinthians 15:29 speaks of Baptizing for the dead which was a custom in Corinth and was used in an argument for the resurrection. I do not see it practiced anywhere else in scripture.
